The uses and varieties of football trophies

While most people with only a passing interest in sport will know about the professional football trophies available at the highest level of the game, such as the World Cup or the Champions League trophy, football trophies can be purchased for non-professional competitions which fulfil much the same function of rewarding winning teams and adding gloss and incentive to a tournament.

This is of particular relevance for the organisers of amateur football competitions – whether they be at school or Sunday league level – because football trophies give players something tangible to compete for in the absence of financial rewards. For schools, football trophies can help teach pupils about the benefits of healthy competition and physical fitness, while also providing prestige for the school with the winning team. In addition, with football trophies for female teams as easily available nowadays, they can also help schools to promote and encourage interest in the game amongst girls.

There is a variety of different football trophies available - from ones designed to specifically reflect the sport itself, in the shape of a football or a player in action, to traditional cups and shields. In addition to team awards, there are also football trophies recognising individual achievements; these include trophies awarded for scoring the most goals in a tournament – often shaped like a football boot, such as the European Golden Shoe award; goalkeeping trophies for keeping the highest number of clean sheets and refereeing trophies in the shape of a whistle. Of course there are also medals for recognising the achievement of each player within a successful team.

A number of different materials are used to manufacture football trophies, with the cups, shields and statues themselves usually made of metal, glass, resin or wood. The bases are generally made of acrylic or wood, with metal plates for engraving the names of winning players or teams.
